With sugar season ramping up, these tips will help you pull in the reins.
1. Replace refined sweets with nutrient-dense fruits. This will keep blood sugar fluctuations in check and give you a boost of disease-fighting phytochemicals. Blue fruits (blueberries, blackberries) fight oxidation in the brain. Apples support the liver. Cantaloupe packs a healthy dose of immune-boosting beta carotene. You’d be hard-pressed to find a cupcake that can boast any of these things.
2. Eat healthy fats. If you’re trying to cut back on sweets, don’t go low-fat. Nourishing fats are highly satiating and can help curb sugar cravings. Coconut oil and ghee are great for stir-frying vegetables. Walnut, avocado and extra virgin olive oils are good for salads.
3. Start with a protein and nutrient-rich breakfast and you will set yourself up for success. In a hurry? Here’s a quick idea. Have 2 boiled eggs (prepared the night before) sliced and topped with avocado and tomato. Instead of coffee, opt for green tea which can further cut sugar cravings.
