Dr. Taz: Please, make 2022 the year for you. We’ve got chances to get it right. The body’s incredible, give it what it needs. Understand you and your chemistry, and you’ll see everything else unfold.

Dr. Taz: Hi everyone, and welcome to Super Woman Wellness, I’m Dr. Taz. I’ve made it my mission throughout my career in integrative medicine to support women in restoring their health, using a blend of Eastern medical wisdom with modern science. In this show, I will guide you through different practices to find your power type and fully embody the healthiest and most passionate version of you. I’m here for you and I can’t wait to get started. This is a Soulfire production.

Dr. Taz: Welcome back, everyone. Welcome back to another episode of Super Woman Wellness, where you know we are determined to bring you back to your super-powered self. Today, I am talking 2022. That’s right, the year of you, hopefully. And hopefully, you’ve had some bandwidth and some space to think about your own personal health and wellness. Now for many, the year has gotten off to an interesting start. We’ve seen a COVID spike. So many people are still juggling and dealing with the fallout from the pandemic. But all of that has resulted in some health trends that are here to stay. And many of these, you may even relate to. I’m here to breakdown the 2022 health trends that I’ve got my eye on, some that I think are worth adopting.

Dr. Taz: All right, let’s start with the first one. I don’t know how you guys are going to feel about this one, but the no alcohol trend is trending, and not just because it’s dry January. But because, really, more and more people are simply understanding that alcohol doesn’t really make them feel very good. Everything from hot flashes and night sweats to weight gain, not being able to focus or concentrate or just being plain old mean the next day, is it all really worth that hangover or that fun night out? I don’t know. A night here, a night there, sure. But the daily drinking, the daily wine habit, more and more science and research is getting behind the fact that it’s simply not good for us. The majority of recommendations are saying to keep alcohol somewhere under four drinks a week. Of course, if you have the occasional night here or there because there’s a special occasion, there needs to be no guilt about that whatsoever. But again, it’s the daily rhythmic drinking that I think becomes collective.

Dr. Taz: And what I get to see in the exam room is those patients of mine that drink consistently do have more candida or overgrowth of yeast in the gut. And then in turn, have more insulin issues and more insulin resistance. So if you want to stop that cycle, that’s maybe one place to begin. But this trend is trending so much so, that alternative drinks and alcohol-free bars might be the new rage. That’s right. Instead of going to your local bar for what’s on tap, you might be heading over to get the latest mocktail, fermented juice drink, who knows, maybe even a fresh green smoothie. One can dream, right? But all these non-alcoholic drinks are really making their mark, their footprint, amongst us so that we have options when we don’t feel like drinking and everyone around us may be doing so.

Dr. Taz: It’s also resulted in what I’m calling trend number two, which is a rise of the adaptogenic drinks. These are drinks with superfoods in them, or superherbs, or even super-spices. So everything from a mushroom tea or coffee to maybe a drink, a fermented fizzy drink that has ashwagandha in it, or a holy basil or tulsi tea, iced tea, even. These are all drinks that we’re seeing more and more on the market, where some of these superfoods or herbs, or even spices, have been infused into some of our traditional drinks to really give us that feeling, first of all, of wellness, but also that we may be doing something additive and cumulative for ourselves. So keep your eye out for that, superfood drinks, superherb drinks, and definitely a lowering of alcohol across the board. I feel like with the pandemic, everyone started drinking and then everyone was like, “Aah, it’s not working, I’ve gained 10 pounds.”

Dr. Taz: All right, guys, I’m so excited to introduce this. Our next partner has a product I use literally every day. I started taking Athletic Greens for one particular reason. And you guys probably know this if you’ve been listening to the show, but it’s all about your gut and your liver. And sometimes it’s so hard, right, to eat properly every single day, or make sure you’re getting all the fiber you need, make sure you’re getting all the great antioxidants you need. Well, that’s why I love Athletic Greens. It tastes great, and I can take a scoop of Athletic Greens, mix it into something I’m drinking, and have it morning or evening and feel amazing throughout the day. So let’s talk about this. What is Athletic Greens? Well, with one scoop of Athletic Greens, you’re absorbing 75 high quality vitamins, minerals, whole-food sourced superfoods, probiotics, and adaptogens, all to help you start your day right. I love the taste. It’s not like a typical green powder that has almost that bitter taste to it.

Dr. Taz: This is lifestyle-friendly guys, whether you eat keto, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, no matter what, you can carry this with you and it works for you. So check it out. I think it’s an amazing product. I like it. I use it, it’s a part of my morning routine. And, right now, it’s time to reclaim your health and arm your immune system with convenient daily nutrition, especially headed into the flu and cold season. It’s just one scoop in a cup of water every day. That’s it. No need for a million different pills and supplements to look out for your health. To make it easy, Athletic Greens is going to give you a free, I love this, guys, a free one year supply of immune supporting vitamin D and five free travel packs with your first purchase. All you have to do is visit Again, that is to take ownership over your health and pick up the ultimate daily nutritional insurance.

Dr. Taz: All right, moving on, another big trend. I don’t know if it’s a more recent trend, but I do think it’s something that continues to gain steam, is the microbiome. Remember that massive organ in our belly where thousands, millions, billions of cells are living and breathing and making sure everything’s working from our metabolism to our brains to our hormones, inflammation, and so much more. Understanding the microbiome is a trend. Whether you guys are sending off stool samples or we’re checking them at our functional medicine practices at CentreSpring MD, but understanding the bacteria that live in your gut and what they can be doing or not doing for your body is absolutely a wellness trend. And take that to the next level with personalized products. Personalized probiotics, personalized gut formulas, the personalization of medicine being another big health trend of 2022, where it’s not a one-size-fits-all for diet, for exercise, for medicine, for our regimens. We really want personalized solutions that take the whole body into consideration and into really understanding how we work and how all those puzzle pieces fit together.

Dr. Taz: Okay. Let’s talk about one more trend. Another trend is tracking. Right? Who has a Fitbit, an Apple Watch, an Oura Ring, a WHOOP? What else is out there? There’s so many little trackers out there, but they definitely are adding to the health equation and to the wellness equation. So many of my patients now track their sleep and they can tell when they’re not getting deep REM sleep or they’re just getting superficial sleep. We’ve got folks tracking their heart rate so that they know when they’re getting stressed, or when they’ve got too much on their plate. People are tracking even things like their respiratory rate and oxygen levels.

Dr. Taz: So tracking is really the next wave. People are already doing it. But putting that data together so that they can have some control over their own personal health and wellness and understand day-to-day, decision-to-decision, the little things that may or may not be making a difference in their overall health picture. So do you guys have one? Do you have a Fitbit or an Oura Ring? So far I have a Fitbit, I’ve got my eye on an Oura Ring, my son has an Apple Watch. But even the little bit of information I get from the Fitbit, I find incredibly helpful.

Dr. Taz: All right, one more trend. What is happening to telemedicine? Stay, go, in-between? Well, there has been an explosion with the pandemic of telemedicine and virtual services. However, it may not be here to stay. At least, to stay in isolation. We’re finding more and more that while this is convenient, at the end of the day, really, folks want to see their doctor. They want to have that personal connection. So a hybrid approach is probably where we are all headed. But I love the fact that telemedicine has really opened up the possibility of seeing patients anywhere and any time and added to flexibility, much like I would equate it to Netflix, Hulu, adding to your options when it comes to programming on any given evening.

Dr. Taz: All right. So those are my top wellness trends for 2022. Did I miss one? Tell me about it and we’ll add it to the list. But please, make 2022 the year for you. We’ve got chances to get it right. The body’s incredible, give it what it needs. Understand you and your chemistry, and you’ll see everything else unfold.
