We’ve all been there—the dreaded discomfort that accompanies the common but unpleasant belly bloat. A bloated gut is no fun, especially when it comes unexpected, or even worse, before a big event. From the foods you eat to even stress, there are so many causes behind belly bloat. If you run into a hard, puffy stomach quite often, it may be due to certain food intolerances. I always recommend keeping a food journal in these cases. Going back to see which foods seem to cause these types of symptoms can keep a bloated belly at bay. In the meantime, here’s a smoothie I love that helps banish bloat fast:

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups of water

3 small celery stalks

1 green apple, cut-up

1 lemon cut in half and freshly squeezed

½ cucumber

Depending on how you like your smoothies, you may want to add in crushed ice or finely chop the celery sticks for a smoother blend. I use a Vitamix to blend all of my smoothies! Simply throw in these fruits and veggies and you’re on your way to a slimmer belly in no time.

You may be wondering how each of these foods can “burst your bubble.” Check out the benefits behind these green (and yellow) goods:

Celery: Celery is a great remedy for stomach bloat because it is full of minerals that aid in digestion. Its high percentage of water and electrolytes help prevent dehydration while acting as a diuretic and reducing water retention. It is packed with flavonoids, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C—all great minerals for recuperating during a bloat flare-up.

Green apples: From the help of its skin, green apples contain insoluble fiber, which is most effective in progressing digestion. They are also a good source of potassium, which is an excellent de-puffing agent.

Lemon: Lemon is a natural detoxifier and acts as a cleansing agent. This helps to eliminate unwanted bloat and toxins from the body. I recommend sipping on hot lemon water in the morning to get your digestive system revved and going for the day.

Cucumber: Cucumbers are an excellent source of quercetin, a flavonoid antioxidant that helps to reduce swelling. It’s no mystery why we use them to de-puff under our eyes! They are also high in silica, caffeic acid, and vitamin C, which aid in the prevention of water retention.

Looking for other ways to reduce bloat quickly? Try nixing carbonated drinks for the day, avoiding salt, cutting out alcohol, and slowing down while chewing. Follow these guidelines while sipping on this smoothie for the ultimate de-bloating regimen, and worry less about a last minute outfit change for that big event!
