ADHD is a complicated diagnosis for many parents to handle. It is easy to feel stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to treatment. On one hand, your child’s ADHD will most likely make school difficult. On the other hand, giving your child stimulants can be equally as scary.

At CentreSpring MD, we treat children with ADHD every week and often see their symptoms almost disappear when we find the right treatment plan. Our approach to ADHD is treatment from the cause instead of the symptoms. ADHD is believed to be caused by a deficiency of dopamine (a neurotransmitter) in the brain, a serotonin deficiency or imbalance of norepinephrine. Stimulants increase dopamine in the brain but at the cost of side-effects like loss of appetite, nervousness, headaches, nausea and trouble sleeping. Our goal is to find what is blocking the production and maintenance of neurotransmitter

levels and treat the root instead of the symptoms.

Many vitamin deficiencies cause symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and forgetfulness. One of the first tests I do on children with ADHD is an extensive, functional medicine nutritional evaluation. This test tells me whether or not a patient is low in a certain amino acid, vitamin, fatty acid or heavy metal. It also evaluates issues like methylation and oxidative stress. Also important is the test’s ability to tell me if a patient has heavy metal toxicity from mercury or lead.

Vitamin B12: B12 is involved in the production and maintenance of the myelin sheath (the protective coating on nerve cells), essential fatty acid metabolism and energy production. Sufficient B12 can also help boost the production of certain neurotransmitters and catecholamines.

Magnesium: Known for having a calming effect through its role in neurotransmitter synthesis, such as serotonin. Magnesium is involved in over three hundred bodily processes. Signs of a deficiency include sensitivity to loud noises, insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, restlessness, panic attacks, salt craving, and both carbohydrate craving and carbohydrate intolerance.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Healthy fats are vitally important for your wellbeing and they are even more important for children. In fact, studies have shown that many children with ADHD have very low blood levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are important structurally and functionally for the brain. EPA affects hormone metabolism, dopamine (neurotransmitter that regulates mood) metabolism and immune systems. DHA is the major structural component of nerve cells.

Food allergies and intolerances have been connected to ADHD. In addition to vitamin deficiencies, I also consider possible food allergies or intolerances. Recent studies have found food additives or a gluten intolerance may be linked to ADHD. An elimination diet and keeping a food diary is a good way determine whether an allergy or intolerance is triggering certain symptoms.

Sleep is often undervalued for those with ADHD. Children with ADHD, on average, need more sleep than non-ADHD children. Lack of sleep can also exacerbate or mimic symptoms of ADHD.

Recent research into meditation for ADHD shows that transcendental meditation reduces anxiety and stress by 50% while also improving attentiveness and concentration. Meditation is ideal for those with ADHD because it does not require focus, but rather practicing an awareness of one’s surroundings. You can start teaching children about meditation by setting aside time every day for them to sit quietly and draw or read. You can also model the behavior for them and have them join you during meditation.

Research also shows that children who play outdoors in “green space” or a place with grass and trees have significantly milder ADHD symptoms than those who play in a “built space” or indoors. Children with hyperactive symptoms benefitted the most from open spaces, like a soccer field or a lawn. Green space also showed improvement in concentration and impulse control.

Treatment of ADHD is about finding what works best for your child. Unlocking the right treatment plan is a process, but will make school a better experience for your child. Call us at 404.814.9808 to schedule an appointment for your child with one of our providers.

Adrenal fatigue comes from an overstimulation of the adrenal glands brought on by chronic stress. The adrenal glands are small organs above the kidneys. They release cortisol (our stress hormone) when responding to stress, and they help to regulate blood pressure. Some stress is normal and actually necessary to be an active participant in society, but too much stress that is not managed for a prolonged period of time is not what we want. We need to keep our adrenals healthy!

    Some Causes

    • A stressful event
    • Negative thinking (this is a BIG one)
    • Food sensitivities
    • Lack of sleep
    • Poor diet
    • Prolonged periods of extreme diet and exercise (we’re talking fitness competitors, etc.)

    Some Symptoms

    • Extreme fatigue
    • Brain fog
    • Irritability
    • Heart palpitations
    • Dizziness
    • Poor sleep
    • Insulin resistance
    • Tired but wired (especially at night)
    • Low blood pressure
    • Unexplained weight gain
    • Cravings for sweet or salty foods
    • Low libido
    • Dark circles under your eyes

There are herbs and supplements that can be beneficial for someone trying to heal from adrenal fatigue, but we recommend that you work with a medical provider to figure out which ones are right for you.

If reducing stress is a goal of yours, we would love to see you! Call 404.814.9808 to schedule an appointment with one of our knowledgeable providers.

Our team is dedicated to improving the symptoms associated with allergies and sensitivities by rebuilding the gut, strengthening the immune system, and prescribing the most effective diet.

We ask the right questions and offer the best resources including:

    • Comprehensive nutritional evaluations—is your diet working for you?
    • Detoxification—where are you?

Anxiety can be a serious condition that can be detrimental to your overall health. In integrative medicine, we know that anxiety can lead to a host of many chronic diseases. Instead of prescribing medication to simply mask your symptoms of anxiety, at CentreSpring MD we aim to get to the root cause through the use of natural remedies.

Conventional medication is reported to not keep the majority, more than 70%, of patients in remission after 5 years. Fortunately, many natural remedies exist that do not carry with them the side effects of conventional medication, nutrition being one of the main components. Eating a diet rich in B vitamins, magnesium and Omega-3 fatty acids can greatly reduce symptoms of anxiety. In addition, supplements and essential oils can also be helpful.

    Some Causes and Symptoms

While anxiety is our body’s natural response to stressful situations, it can also be detrimental to our health when it is excessively prevalent in our day-to-day lives. If anxiety is your response in situations where it isn’t appropriate, and it is a constant feeling for you, that is when you know you must take steps to minimize symptoms and begin to heal.

    Common causes of anxiety are:

    • Stress
    • Past traumatic experience
    • Thyroid imbalance
    • Hormone imbalance
    • Too much caffeine or sugar
    • Excessive drinking

    Common symptoms include:

    • Tightness in the chest
    • Muscle tension
    • Fast heartbeat/heart palpatations
    • High blood pressure
    • Trouble sleeping/insomnia
    • Panic attacks
    • Irritability
    • Lack of concentration
    • Digestive issues

While there are many medications on the market that claim to treat anxiety, as mentioned above, they often come with unpleasant and even dangerous side effects.

Natural treatments that are proven to help reduce your symptoms range from supplementation, to essential oils, to nutrition.

    • Ashwagandha
    • Kava root
    • GABA
    • Magnesium
    • B Complex

    • Minimally processed foods; aim for a clean, well-balanced diet
    • Limit sugar intake
    • Little to no caffeine or alcohol

    Essential oils:

    • Lavendar
    • Chamomile

    • Light exercise
    • Sleep (aim for 7-9 hours per night)
    • Meditiation
    • CranioSacral Therapy
    • Regular massages/facials for relaxation

To find out more about how we approach anxiety here at CentreSpring MD, please call our office at 404.814.9808 and schedule an appointment with one of our providers who will develop a customized, unique treatment plan for you to heal you from the inside out.

Can we stop aging or reverse the hand of time? Not exactly, but we can help to slow the aging process. Aging, research suggests, is a continuum, determined by the interplay of your micronutrient status, detoxification capacity, inflammation risks and epigenetics. We can measure your aging index by looking at your telomeres, amongst other markers. Stop the continuum by learning more about your health, strategies to reverse aging and natural cosmetic alternatives to look your best.

There are increasing numbers of autoimmune diseases today, a reflection of the environment and its influence on our genetics and micro-biome. At CentreSpring MD, we have worked with thousands of patients battling an autoimmune disease. From inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis) to Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis to CIDP, our providers tackle these diseases by evaluating the cause of inflammation and where inflammation and epigenetics interact to create disease. We are happy to work with your rheumatologist as well, combining the best of conventional treatments with strategies to combat inflammation with a holistic approach. We use sophisticated testing and lab analysis to understand the root of your autoimmune disease and get you back to your centre.

Ayurveda is an ancient approach to medicine that seeks the balance of one’s physical body with his or her mind and spirit. Founded in India, this approach takes into account an individual’s composition along with season, geography, surroundings and nutrition. Ayurveda gives each person a unique constitution based on three constitutional principles: Pitta, Vatta and Kapha. Our providers use these concepts in developing your care.

For patients with cancer—whether just receiving the diagnosis, currently receiving treatment, or in post care—acupuncture is used to support the physical body and the spirit. Balancing the two by treating the physical symptoms—like pain in bones, hot flashes or coldness, poor or strong appetite—and the emotional aspects—like sadness, anger or frustration—help to support the patient as a whole.
